“Let’s do the time warp again!”
When the ghouls come out, it must be Halloween. It has become what is perhaps the biggest LGBT+ holiday of the year. Party goers work for days on their costumes. And of course theatres all over the country screen The Rocky Horror Picture Show usually with live audience participation.
The cult classic, starring Tim Curry, assembles an outrageous group of characters including a young couple, Brad and Janet. They are confronted by mad “Doctor” Frank N. Furter, a transvestite from the planet Transsexual in the galaxy of Transylvania.
Somewhere along the way, the film became a great audience participation event with people dressing up in costume, quoting lines from the movie, dancing on stage and throwing things around the theatre. A great evening adventure and it is campy as hell!
The predecessor to the movie was the stage play, The Rocky Horror Show. It features the same characters, the same zany music and stage antics and the same audience participation.
And, if you’re up to a weekly dose of HORROR! (Caps aren’t accidental.) you can watch American Horror Story: Cult each Tuesday on FX at 9 p.m. CDT. This season is by far the scariest, goriest yet and the cast is full of LGBT+ actors and characters.
If you aren’t up to going out for the evening (we’re sorry about that), get a copy of one of the most homoerotic horror movies ever made, Interview With A Vampire. If Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise’s characters aren’t gay lovers, then what are they?
If you want to see The Rocky Horror Show on stage, the Tulsa University (TU) Department of Theatre will present the cult classic musical October 19-21. Performances begin Thursday and Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 7 p.m. and again at midnight for a special “Creature of the Night” super-fan experience.
Dust off your fishnets and heels. Sing along, shout at the actors and dance in the aisles. TU’s Saturday midnight performance will also feature an audience costume contest.
All performances will be held in Kendall Hall’s Chapman Theatre on the TU campus.
With book, music and lyrics by Richard O’Brien, The Rocky Horror Show is a rollicking homage to the early science fiction horror movies.
This Tony-nominated audience interactive production invites you to join the fun. Let’s do the “Time Warp” again! After all, it’s just a jump to the left. Come party with your Rocky Horror favorites: Riff Raff, Magenta, Eddie and Dr. Frank-N-Furter.
Admission is $20 for adults, $10 for senior citizens and area students, and $6 for TU students, faculty and staff. Local high school students receive one free ticket with I.D.
Tickets may be purchased online at myticketoffice.com, by phone at (918) 631- 2567 or at the Kendall Hall box office on the TU campus.
