Battalion chief accused of harassment to appeal termination
HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. (AP) — A Florida battalion chief accused of harassment has been fired.
The South Florida Sun Sentinel reports (http://bit.ly/1LNxt8w ) Hallandale Beach Battalion Chief Jeff Lyon was let go Friday after a department-wide investigation found that he made inappropriate comments about women, minorities and lesbians. The city manager signed a termination letter.
Lyon's attorney, Randy Fleischer, says Lyon hopes to get his job back by appealing to the state's Public Employee Relations Commission. Fleischer says Lyon should have been allowed to move one position down the chain of command to avoid termination.
Fleischer says Lyon admits to referring to a firefighter as a token, but he apologized. He also denies making derogatory comments to women at work.
Hallandale Beach Fire Chief Dan Sullivan also was fired more than two weeks before Lyon's termination.
