Boston traffic reporter comes out as a woman
BOSTON (AP) — The voice flowing from the radios of tens of thousands of Boston-area drivers during the morning commute was the same.
But the name was different.
WBZ-AM traffic reporter Scott Eck signed off for the first time Wednesday as Kristen Eck, a public step toward her transition.
Eck says she knew at the age of 5 she was supposed to be a girl. But she says years of "inner turmoil" have been affecting her health recently. She decided it was time to make the transition.
Eck has been undergoing hormone therapy and plans to have sex reassignment surgery in a year.
She says her colleagues at the station have been unflinchingly supportive. Eck reports from a helicopter on crashes, traffic jams and detours during morning and evening commute times.
