Celebrities stand with LGBTQ+ youth
Today is Spirit Day and many across the country and world are Taking the Purple Pledge and standing against bullying of LBGTQ+ youth.
Social media is filled with purple as people show their support for the cause. A large portion of the purple army are celebrities who’ve donated to the cause in addition to wearing purple.
Last night songwriter and activist Justin Tranter hosted his second annual Spirit Day fundraiser according to NewNowNext. All the proceeds went to GLAAD.
Those in attendance included allies Nick Jonas and Imagine Dragos lead singer Dan Reynolds who both donated $50,000 to the cause. Other celebrities included Ariadne Getty and her son August who donated a total of $130,000. Also, in attendance were Derek Hough and Darren Criss who both pledged $5,000 to GLADD.
A total of $400,000 was raised at the event for GLADD to continue its work with LGBTQ+ youth. Spirit Day has been celebrated nationally since 2010 and each year the support grows.
“What [GLAAD has done] for years and years and years is make this business a gazillion dollars. So, we have this fabulous private night of music and celebration to shine a light on all the good things GLAAD does. I call people and I also ask them [to participate] in sessions when they can’t say no.”
