Cher’s role in “Mamma Mia” sequel revealed
Cher teased fans over the weekend with Tweets about her being in the Mamma Mia sequel now being filmed. She said she had been cast in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again but wouldn’t say what her role is in the upcoming movie.
Today, the New York Post reveled Cher’s role in the movie. She is cast as Meryl Streep’s mother.
“That may seem odd,” the Post wrote, “since Meryl’s 68 and Cher is 71, but Cher plays Meryl’s character’s mother in flashbacks from the ’60s.
“Cher will be a dancing queen before Dancing Queen was ever written.”
“Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, Amanda Seyfried, and Christine Baranski are returning, with Ol Parker writing and directing,” according to Variety. “The film goes back and forth in time to show how relationships forged in the past resonate in the present.”
That sets the stage for Cher’s role.
“Lily James will play the role of Young Donna. Young versions of Rosie and Tanya will be portrayed by Alexa Davies and Jessica Keenan Wynn, respectively. Young Sam will be played by Jeremy Irvine, while Young Bill is Josh Dylan and Young Harry is Hugh Skinner,” Variety continued.
“The movie began shooting in September in the U.K. and Croatia. Littlestar’s Judy Craymer and Playtone’s Gary Goetzman, who produced the original, will re-team for the sequel. Craymer is also the creator and producer of the stage musical.
“Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus are aboard again to provide music and lyrics and serve as executive producers. Universal’s Kristen Lowe and Lexi Barta will oversee production for the studio.”
It hasn’t been revealed which ABBA songs will be in the sequel, but there is a treasure trove of songs that were not in the first movie that would fit in the new one if Andersson and Ulvaeus see fit.
Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again includes the entire core cast of Mamma Mia, will come to theatres July 20, 2018.
