RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Religious leaders, private school educators and other social conservatives say North Carolina elected officials are running out of time to overturn Charlotte's new non-discrimination ordinance, particularly on restroom use by transgender people.

About 100 people gathered Monday outside the old Capitol building, where Gov. Pat McCrory's office is located. Speakers urged legislators to act before the city's ordinance takes effect April 1. The law allows transgender people to use restrooms that align with their gender identity.

Legislative leaders are considering whether to hold a special session, probably for a bill that would address Charlotte's ordinance. Tami Fitzgerald with the North Carolina Values Coalition says other cities will pass similar ordinances if Charlotte's rules are not canceled.

Gay-rights groups want legislators to stay away from the ordinance.
