Court to school: Let Gavin Grimm use boys bathroom
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A federal district court has ordered a Virginia school board to allow a transgender teen to use the boys bathroom at his school.
U.S. District Court Judge Robert G. Doumar ruled Thursday that the Gloucester County School Board must allow Gavin Grimm to use the bathroom that matches his gender identity while the case is being litigated in court.
The order comes after the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in April that the school board discriminated against Grimm by forbidding him from using the boys restroom. The school board is planning to ask the U.S. Supreme Court to review the appeals court decision.
Grimm said in a statement Thursday that he's elated to be able to attend his senior year of high school with his "full rights restored."
