Duncan, Oklahoma to host more Pride events

Duncan’s Proud580 group hosted its first LGBTQ+ Pride Walk in April, and they plan to host more LGBTQ+ inclusive events.
Proud580 is an organization founded by Jacob Howerton dedicated to connecting and empowering LGBTQ+ people in Duncan.
Howerton said it’s important for Duncan to have a Pride celebration to make it a safer place for people to be who they are.
“I want people to know that we are a family,” he said. “We want everyone to come and be who they are and find amazing people to connect with.”
He said sometimes it’s a frightening experience to be LGBTQ+ in Duncan.
“We never know how someone is going to react or treat us,” Howerton said. “But for me, it’s a part of who I am, and I’m not going to change who I am just because someone tells me to.”
Proud580 tried to get a slot in the OKC Pride celebration, Howerton said, but they were told they should try to host an event in their hometown first.
On April 26, 15-20 people marched towards the Stephens County Courthouse in Duncan, marking their first LGBTQ+ Pride Walk.
“We were extremely excited for all the love and support we got from people in our community,” Howerton said. “Honestly I wouldn’t change anything except how people see our LGBTQ+ community group. We want everyone to feel loved, welcomed and supported.”
While they marched, two men read scripture through a loudspeaker, but Proud580 marched on.
“Yes, our town has its flaws, but I believe there is a lot more good people in the community than what people know,” Howerton said.
