Ferndale Pride festival to offer legal same-sex marriages

FERNDALE, Mich. (AP) — An annual Detroit-area festival celebrating the LGBT community will begin offering legal same-sex marriages performed by the city's mayor and clergy of various faiths.

The Daily Tribune (http://bit.ly/1T8Jjkp ) reports that this year's Ferndale Pride festival on June 4 will mark the first time the event has featured legal marriages for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender couples. Ferndale Mayor Dave Coulter and his successors had performed commitment ceremonies in the years before the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in June 2015 that same-sex marriage is a Constitutional right.

Festival chairwoman Julia Music expects many couples to show up to tie the knot at the Get Married at Ferndale Pride event held at Level One Bank's art gallery.

An estimated 15,000 people are expected to attend this year's festival.
