Firestorm of political scandal rips through Alabama

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Alabama politics are at a low point even by Alabama standards: Three top elected officials are embroiled in scandal or facing removal from office.

Chief Justice Roy Moore was suspended from office Friday and faces possible ouster over his attempts to block gay marriage following the U.S. Supreme Court ruling on same-sex unions. The Christian conservative was previously removed from the same position in 2003.

Meanwhile, legislators are deciding what to do with an impeachment resolution against Gov. Robert Bentley amid a sexually charged scandal. And GOP House Speaker Mike Hubbard awaits a trial on 23 felony ethics charges that could result in his removal.

Moore says he will fight to remain chief justice. He is accusing state judicial investigators of listening to the agenda of gay and transgender people.
