The Gayly and Pollard Theatre present The Vagina Monologues
Hosting “Pride Matinee” June 8
“People hear the word ‘Vagina’ and jump to conclusions,” said Pollard Theatre Director Timothy Stewart. “That’s why we say, ‘If you can’t say it, you need to see it.’”
The young director added that people automatically start to judge and condemn the production without ever reading, seeing or knowing anything about it. “They hear ‘Vagina’ and the walls go up. In the script, there in black and white, it talks about Oklahoma City and previous productions. I didn’t add it in there. It wasn’t an ‘insert your city here’ scenario. Eve Ensler wrote that ‘they love vaginas in Oklahoma City.’”
Adapted from the award-winning one-woman show that's rocked audiences around the world, The Vagina Monologues gives voice to a chorus of lusty, outrageous, poignant, and thoroughly human stories, transforming the question mark hovering over the female anatomy into a permanent victory sign.
“I have three extremely talented women for this show; Elin Bhaird, Megan Montgomery and Brenda Williams,” adds Stewart. “They are powerful in their own right, but put them together and it’s going to be amazing!”
Stewart is in his thirteenth year as the Pollard Theatre's Properties Master and acts and directs in many roles with the company and wanted to direct this production because it’s a show and a voice that doesn’t get to be heard very often.
“The Gaylyhas been an awesome force for us,” Stewart said in conclusion. “The moment it was on the season, The Gayly was right there ready to sponsor the production. The support we have received has truly outweighed any negativity.”
The Vagina Monologues will be performed June 6th - 14th, 2014 at the Pollard Theatre in Downtown Historic Guthrie, OK at 120 West Harrison Avenue. For directions or questions, visit www.thepollard.org or call (405) 282-2800.
