Jay-Z’s Mom discusses coming out to her son

If you’ve listened to Jay-Z’s latest album, 4:44 you might remember a few lyrics from the song, “Smile.”

The song addresses his mother Gloria Carter’s battle to feel comfortable as a lesbian.

    “Mama had four kids, but she’s a lesbian

     Had to pretend so long that she’s a thespian

     Had to hide in the closet, so she medicate

     Society shame and the pain was too much to take

     Cried tears of joy when you fell in love

     Don’t matter to me if it’s a him or her”

Recently, Gloria opened up about her coming out story to D’USSE Friday in a podcast interview.

“I just finally started telling Jay who I was,” said Gloria. “Besides your mother, this is the person that I am. This is the life that I live.”

Jay-Z’s response was emotional.

“So my son started actually tearing,” added Gloria. “He’s like, ‘That had to be a horrible life ma.’ I was like, my life was never horrible. It was just different.”

After hearing his mother’s response, Jay-Z wanted to write a song about his mother. While she was skeptical at first, after some talking, they decided to go forward with it.

Now, the rap star claims that he takes great pride in “Smile.”
