Judge tosses lawsuit challenging VA schools' transgender policy

Fairfax, Va. (AP) — A judge has dismissed a lawsuit that sought to overturn protections for transgender students in Fairfax County Public Schools.

Andrea Lafferty, head of the Traditional Values Coalition, and an unnamed student sued the county school board in December after the board voted to bar discrimination based on gender identity. Opponents of the policy said it would too easily allow boys to use girls' restrooms and vice versa.

Lafferty told The Washington Post that she plans to appeal the decision, handed down Friday by a Fairfax County Circuit Court judge.

A federal appeals court in Richmond is deciding a case in Gloucester County where a student who was born female but identifies as male has been barred from using boys' restrooms.
