Lafayette gives preliminary approval to gender ID protectio

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — The Lafayette City Council has given preliminary approval to adopt anti-discrimination protection for transgender people.

The (Lafayette) Journal & Courier reports council members voted unanimously Monday night to add gender identity, age and veteran status to the list of protections in the city's human relations ordinance. The ordinance covers complaints about housing, employment and accommodations based on race, sex, religion, color, disability, familial status and national origin.

Several pastors urged the council to hold off on the vote and do more study about bathroom rights.

The vote to add gender identity to the city's anti-discrimination code came 23 years after Lafayette adopted anti-discrimination protections for gays and lesbians. The city council must consider the ordinance a second time, with a vote scheduled for September.
