Lawton/Ft. Sill Pride to focus on community service efforts
At the Lawton/Ft. Sill Pride meeting September 15, an open discussion was held to determine the needs and desires of the queer community in Lawton/Ft. Sill. The group decided it will focus on community service efforts and fostering the local community in the upcoming year. The group wants to see the previously held Rainbow Ball to continue as a landmark annual tradition, as well as events that would bolster the local drag community and youth in the surrounding area. In addition, volunteering for and providing support to local charities and shelters was given considerate emphasis.
President Taylor Brunwald was excited about the new direction for Lawton/Ft. Sill Pride. “We’re in a unique position this year to become a positive force in our city,” Brunwald said. “Working towards positive change is a great way to encourage unity for our community. As a young gay man in southwest Oklahoma, it’s important to me that we foster diversity and equality through volunteering our time towards good causes.”
The previously vacant board position of Treasurer was filled with the election of Mason Soto, completing the Board of Directors. “With a diverse, enthusiastic board, I’m certain we will best represent our community,” Brunwald said. “I have every confidence in the board and I’m eager to continue working with everyone.”
Lawton/Ft. Sill Pride meets on the third Sunday of each month. The next meeting will be held at 7pm on Sunday, October 20 at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Lawton, 816 W. Gore Blvd, in Lawton. Meetings are open to the public and everyone is encouraged to attend.
