Matisse in His Time
OKCMOA presents “Once-in-a-lifetime exhibition”
The Oklahoma City Museum of Art (OKCMOA) is the exclusive North American venue to host Matisse in His Time: Masterworks of Modernism from the Centre Pompidou, Paris, and demand is expected to be high.
“We have already received many requests from across the country and even internationally,” said OKCMOA President and CEO E. Michael Whittington. “This truly is a once-in-a-lifetime exhibition. We're expecting high attendance, especially on weekends. I encourage everyone to plan their visit as far in advance as possible.”
Matisse in His Time will include 100 works of art, including nearly 50 paintings, sculptures and works on paper by Henri Matisse, as well as masterworks by his contemporaries - Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, Georges Braque, André Derain, Fernand Léger and Amadeo Modigliani. The exhibition will be on view from June 18 through September 18.
The exhibition is made possible by a grant from Inasmuch Foundation in honor of its founder Edith Kinney Gaylord. Gaylord created the Oklahoma City-based foundation in 1982 and would have celebrated her 100th birthday on March 5. In addition to the fine arts, Inasmuch Foundation supports education, health and human services and community enhancement initiatives that enrich the quality of life for Oklahomans.
The Museum's collection covers a period of five centuries with highlights in European and American art from the 19th and 20th centuries, a growing collection of contemporary art, and one of the world's largest public collections of glass sculpture by Dale Chihuly.
Visitors are encouraged to buy tickets to Matisse early to secure their preferred day and time. Given the high demand anticipated, tickets will be sold for specific dates and times in order to reduce visitor wait time and may be purchased at www.okcmoa.com/matisse.
Adult tickets are $12 and will include admission to the entire museum. Discounted tickets are available for active military members, seniors, students and children. Members of the Museum receive free admission to the exhibition but are still encouraged to reserve tickets ahead of time. Group tours are available at a discounted ticket price for groups of 15 or more. Reservations must be made in advance at (405) 278-8213.
