NC House Democrats lodge chamber complaint on marriage law

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — More than 40 House Democrats have signed a formal protest complaining how Republicans got legislation passed that exempts some court officials from performing gay marriage duties on religious objections.

The documents sent Tuesday to Speaker Tim Moore blasted on constitutional and procedural grounds the bill's passage and override of Gov. Pat McCrory's veto of the measure this month.

Minority Leader Larry Hall and other Democrats say the law treats North Carolina residents unequally and will likely lead to "a series of indignities" for gays and lesbians. Magistrates and some register of deeds workers who cite the law must stop working in all marriages.

The Democrats also argue delays in the veto override violated the state Constitution and House rules.

The protest can't overturn the law, but opponents have threatened lawsuits.
