Kansas residents donate $2M to presidential candidates, PACs, super PACs

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Federal Election Commission data shows that Kansas residents have donated more than $1.8 million to presidential candidates and hundreds of millions more through PACs and super PACs.

Kansas ranks in the bottom 10 among states' donations between January 2015 and March 2016, The Wichita Eagle (http://bit.ly/1TjKmuE ) reported.

Less than 4,000 Kansas residents made donations to individual candidates. The most common individual donation was $50. About two-thirds of all donations were $50 or less.

But the average donor gave money to their candidate five times, and the most common total amount given was $250.

About 200 individual donations were more than $1,000. About 400 people gave more than $1,000 in total.

In recent elections, Republican presidential candidates have received about 60 percent of the votes in Kansas. In this year's total donations, they received a slightly greater number of total donations.

Ben Carson raised more than $350,000 in Kansas, about 20 percent of the Kansas total. He received less than 10 percent of total donations in the nation.

Ted Cruz raised 23 percent of total donations in Kansas, more than twice what he received nationally.

Donald Trump raised less than $18,000 in Kansas, less than 1 percent of all donations. He takes in about 7 percent of all donations nationally.

As for the Democratic candidates, Hillary Clinton raised nearly $345,000 in Kansas, whereas Bernie Sanders raised more than $325,000. This is the opposite of nationally, where Sanders has slightly out-raised Clinton.

At this point in the 2012 campaign, Kansas residents had donated $2.4 million. Nearly twice as many Kansas residents gave money in this election cycle than in 2012, although each person has given less.
