Southern Arkansas University raises tuition 3.8 percent

CAMDEN, Ark. (AP) — Students at Southern Arkansas University will pay 3.8 percent more in tuition and fees for the coming school year.

Those taking 30 credit hours during the fall and spring semesters will pay about $8,181 — an increase of nearly $300 over the current $7,896 in tuition and fees under the proposal approved by the SAU Board of Trustees during its meeting in Camden on Thursday.

SAU is the latest university in the state to approve tuition increases.

The University of Arkansas System Board of Trustees previously approved increases at each of the five universities in the system.

The UA System increases range from 3.5 percent at the flagship campus in Fayetteville to 5.7 percent at UA-Little Rock; 6 percent at UA-Fort Smith; 6.5 percent at UA-Pine Bluff; and 11.8 percent at UA-Monticello. Four of the UA System's five community colleges are also asking to raise tuition. The fifth, the UA Community College at Batesville, is seeking to increase fees.

At Arkansas Tech University in Russellville, students will pay 1.86 percent more, while Henderson State University in Arkadelphia has approved a 3.86 percent increase.

The board for the University of Central Arkansas in Conway is also considering tuition and fee increases. The Arkansas State University System with its flagship campus in Jonesboro meets in early June to discuss tuition rates.
