When the owners of the Boomerang Club in Wichita opened their doors just over a year ago, they envisioned a place where people could mingle, dance, have some drinks, meet friends and have a good time. They weren’t thinking “leather bar,” but that’s what “The Back Room” has become.

“The Back Room is literally where the bar is located, relative to our main club space,” said Josh Pfister, co-owner. “We wanted to give the new addition its own identity, while still connecting it to our success with Club Boomerang. Though we don't have any of the activities found in the "back room" of leather bars in the past, the name does acknowledge that history with a wink and a smile.”

Pfister and his partner, co-owner Brad Thomison said the redesign was a major undertaking.

“This portion of our property was previously mostly unused,” said Thomison. “It was set up as a dining room with tables and chairs, but we didn't have much use for it in its previous form. As we approached our one-year anniversary, we wanted to expand our business to reach new customers, as well as extend our weekend-only hours to be seven days a week. We knew that making use of this space would be the best way to do that, and a leather and BDSM themed bar seemed to fit best with both our personal interest and our desire to provide space for this growing community in Wichita.”

The couple explained that since leather bars are a long-standing staple in the gay and lesbian bar scene, it was an obvious choice. Further, they said, these places are often historically a gathering place for men interested in leather and fetish gear, but more contemporary clubs, including The Back Room at Club Boomerang, are welcoming to men, women, and trans people, as well as those who don't necessarily identify as a member of the leather and BDSM community.

“We decided to go with this concept primarily to give the leather and BDSM people of Wichita a safe place to gather, host group meetings, and have fun, as well as create an environment where people who were interested in getting involved with the community could come and learn more, and make new friends,” adds Thomison. “Club Boomerang has always been about building community, and this addition to our business is the perfect embodiment of that idea.”

Club Boomerang has a full dinner menu every day.

“We are still committed to the fresh, hand-made menu that has made us so successful up to this point,” Thomison said with enthusiasm. “Since our opening with burgers and wings, we've added salads, wraps, nachos, and pizza. We also do nightly food and drink specials like BOGO burgers on Mondays, Taco Tuesdays, and $5 pizza on Wednesday.”

Both owners say they are so grateful for everyone that has come out to support them during their first year in business. “We are always looking for new opportunities to bring new entertainment and excitement to our venue.”

Grand hours for both The Boomerang and Back Room are Sunday - Wednesday 5 p.m. to Midnight and Thursday - Saturday 5 p.m. – 2 a.m. The Back Room hours are exclusive on Mon - Wed, and The Back Room is closed on Sundays. For more information, visit www.clubboomerang.com.
