Trump administration backs anti-LGBT+ cake shop
If you aren’t familiar with the Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission case, it involves a bakery that refused to sell a same-sex couple cake for their wedding reception.
You can find previous reporting on the story here.
Despite lower courts finding that the bakery was violating Colorado’s non-discrimination law, the Justice Department filed a brief arguing that businesses open to the public are backed by the constitution when discriminating against LGBT+ people.
“This Justice Department has already made its hostility to the rights of LGBT people and so many others crystal clear,” said Louise Melling, deputy legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union. “But this brief was shocking, even for this administration. What the Trump Administration is advocating for is nothing short of a constitutional right to discriminate.”
“We are confident that the Supreme Court will rule on the side of equal rights just as the lower courts have.”
Now, all one can do is wait and see what decision will be made.
