For the First Friday Gallery Walk in June, the Paseo Arts Association is pleased to present the work of artists Yun Hendricks and Karam Cheong. Opening on Friday, June 7 from 6-10pm in the Paseo Art Space (3022 Paseo), the work of these two Korean-American artists navigate shifting identities and invented worlds through vivid color and shape in a series of oil paintings.

For Yun Hendricks, landscape and abstract painting became a way for her to express loss and nostalgia of leaving her hometown in Korea.“ It may have been because of a primordial longing for something of which I have lost touch, a mighty Neolithic wild…or perhaps it was a sentimental approach to the hometown nature I left behind,” she describes.

More and more, Hendricks has moved away from landscapes toward human figures, bright bolts of color, and stark black lines fill her canvases. “Exploring various mixed media, highly sophisticated hue and texture,” Hendricks’ subject matter has shifted towards increasingly abstract subject matter, but the importance of her art practice has not diminished.“ Whether my creation is an intellectual manipulation or a coping mechanism,” Hendricks adds, “I paint because nothing else seems to measure up.”

Karam Cheong’s work radiates with color and a bold use of texture. Growing up in Seoul, South Korea and studying design at Parsons in New York, Cheong began her creative career as a graphic designer, but left the field to pursue her true passion: fine art.

Cheong’s work shows a dedication to experimentation and an inspired use of art materials. Her oil paint- often applied by palette knife- has volume and rough edges, practically leaping off of her canvases.
