Tonight at 8 p.m.on The CW is the premier of the newest season of “Supergirl” and this year the show welcomes a new hero.

Nicole Maines, a transgender activist and actress, will play Nia Nal or Dreamer, the first transgender superhero on television.

Many have been excited for the premiere as it is a huge step for members of the LGBTQ+ community according to ABC News.

"If I had had a trans superhero, someone who looks like me wearing a cape, [while] growing up, that would have changed the game," the actress recently told USA Today. "That would have been an entire new level of validation in myself to think that I can be a superhero."

Before she received the role, Maines was viewed as a hero to the transgender community because of her activism.

In 2013, the actress made national news because she wasn’t allowed to use the girl’s restroom at her school. She fought the injustice and took her case all the way to Maine’s Supreme Judicial Court.

She won her case and the court rules her rights were violated.

Manies was also featured in the book, "Becoming Nicole: The Transformation of an American Family," guest-starred on USA's "Royal Pains" as a transgender teen and was featured in the documentary “The Trans List.”

She’s now playing Nia Nal who is a young reporter working with Kara Danvers (Supergirl) at CatCo.

Nia’s superpower, according to USA Today, is that she can see the future, which is why her name is Dreamer.

"What's amazing with Nia is we have a trans woman who has personality and growth outside her trans-ness," Maines said. "She's a reporter, a superhero, a trans woman. She has a personal life.”
