Reduxion theatre company presents controversial classic play

The play Lysistrata was originally performed in classical Athens in 411 BC. The show is a comic account of one woman’s extraordinary mission to end the Peloponnesian War by inciting a sex-strike.

Reduxion Theatre Company (RTC) announced the opening of the new season with Aristophanes’ controversial farce Lysistrata. The show is produced at the company’s performance venue, at 914 North Broadway Avenue, located in Oklahoma City’s Automobile Alley. Lysistrata is the first production of Reduxion’s 2014-2015, Scandalous season. The play opened on August 8, and continues on weekends through August 30.

The play Lysistrata was originally performed in classical Athens in 411 BC. The show is a comic account of one woman’s extraordinary mission to end the Peloponnesian War by inciting a sex-strike. This effort quickly gets the attention of the warring factions and a dialogue is opened up about women’s rights, sex and the nature of war. “I am astounded by timeliness of this play,” said Reduction Executive/Artistic Director and Lysistrata director Tyler Woods. RTC performs a contemporary adaptation by playwright Ranjit Bolt.

This show is topical! Political protest groups such as Femen and other women’s organizations around the world are using these bold tactics today to bring about reform, peace and to promote the rights of women. There was an actual sex-strike campaign called Don’t Give It to a Russian begun by a Ukrainian women’s organization earlier this year. And in February, a group of Japanese women called for a sex strike against men who voted for Yoichi Masuzoe. “Women of the world still seek daring platforms to gain attention for these persistent concerns. We need to revisit this play today more than ever!” said Woods.

Although the show deals with serious subject matter: women’s rights, sexual politics, and gender-basis, the show is first and foremost a hilarious comedy. “It’s at once burlesque, and vaudeville at it’s best!”

All shows perform at Reduxion’s Automobile Alley venue, at 914 North Broadway Avenue, Suite 120 in Oklahoma City. Tickets are available for purchase in advance online at www.www.reduxiontheatre. com or at the door, the day of each performance.

The show contains sexual situations and some nudity. This show is not recommended for patrons under 17 years of age.
