Couple who became face of Utah gay marriage are wed
Salt Lake City (AP) — The young couple that became the face of gay marriage in Utah wed in downtown Salt Lake City on Sunday in front of about 1,000 people.
Derek Kitchen and Moudi Sbeity were one of three gay and lesbian couples who were plaintiffs in a lawsuit against Utah that led a federal judge to overturn a same-sex marriage ban in 2013.
The U.S. Supreme Court in October declined to hear Utah's appeal in the case, leading to an effective legalization of gay marriage in the state.
Kitchen, 26, and Sbeity, 27, told The Salt Lake Tribune that they chose to have a public wedding ceremony because the legal case impacted many in the state's gay community.
