Fighting Discrimination Against People Living with HIV/AIDS
RAIN Oklahoma is hosting Megan Schuller, attorney with the United States Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division. Ms. Schuller will present the Department of Justice, Community Outreach Presentation, Fighting Discrimination Against People With HIV/AIDS.
The U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division has significant enforcement authority over several federal laws that protect individuals with HIV/AIDS from discrimination on the basis of their HIV/AIDS status. In furtherance of its leadership role, the Division is partnering with community-based groups in order to educate individuals with HIV/AIDS about their rights under the law.
The information will be presented regarding discrimination in the context of the American's with Disabilities Act (ADA) and will provide information regarding protection provided by the ADA for HIV positive individuals we serve.
This talk will cover: (1) what is illegal discrimination against persons with HIV/AIDS in employment, housing, and the provision of public and private services; (2) what to do if someone has been illegally discriminated against based on HIV/AIDS; and (3) where to get more information. In addition, we will discuss federal civil rights protections for LGBT people, including the recently enacted Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act. Time will be permitted for questions from attendees.
Ms. Schuller will begin the presentation at 1:00 PM, Thursday, March 15th at Ghostlight Theatre Club 3110 N. Walker, Oklahoma City. This presentation is recommended for case managers, supervisors, administrators and others who may receive complaints or concerns from clients or community members.
We are very excited to host Ms. Schuller and assist in providing this valuable information to our community partners.
