NYC fire department releases video supporting LGBT youth

For National Coming Out Day, FDNY is supporting the It Gets Better Project's mission.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Fire Department of New York wants struggling lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth know that life does get better.

Commissioner Daniel Nigro announced Sunday that the FDNY has made an "It Gets Better" video, featuring a dozen firefighters, paramedics and EMTs who discuss the challenges LGBT youth face.

The video is part of the nonprofit It Gets Better Project founded in 2010 by activists Dan Savage and his husband, Terry Miller. The pair started the organization in response to the suicides of teenagers who were bullied because they were gay.

On their Facebook page today, October 11th, the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) posted:
"For National Coming Out Day, FDNY is supporting the It Gets Better Project's mission to communicate to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning youth around the world that life gets better, and to create and inspire the changes needed to improve quality of life for them. The FDNY video features 12 active FDNY Firefighters, Paramedics, EMTs discussing the challenges they faced throughout their lives and the success they have found both as adults and as members of New York’s Bravest."

National Coming Out Day is celebrated annually on October 11th.
