OkEq’s ‘First Thursday’ features the works of Susan Foust
Tulsa - A show featuring the works of Susan Foust and titled “Vehicle of Wash” headlines Tulsa’s July “First Thursday” exhibit. Oklahomans for Equality sponsors the monthly show, which begins with a reception on Thursday, July 3 from 6-9pm. The exhibit continues throughout the month.
A school library media specialist at Emerson Elementary in Tulsa, Susan Foust is probably not the only person who has found solace by sitting in an automatic car wash, but she is likely one of the few who spend time taking photos there. Like a stealth paparazzi, Susan sneaks off to various auto-washeries to capture a myriad of liquids at play with light, movement and color.
Starting with a few random shots on her camera-phone, her artist’s eye found a new genre and passion and created "Vehicle of Wash." “When I am in the car wash, no one can touch me. Inside the whirling machine, I cannot escape. In the isolation, if you pay close attention, you can see light playing with water and color swirling with motion.” The photographer's abstract work evokes feeling and memories from things that are ethereal. Water is the vehicle that takes the viewer into that other realm.
Her work has been created with both an HTC smart phone and a Sony camera. By editing, pulling colors through and adjusting the layering, the water has come alive in this unique genre.
The show begins with a reception on Thursday, July 3 from 6-9pm at the Dennis R. Neill Equality Center, 621 E. 4th Street in downtown Tulsa. There will be a door prize drawn of the artist’s work; the show continues throughout the month.
