Oklahoma has a myriad of LGBTQ Youth support groups. Youth who participate in these group are the focus artists in November’s Oklahomans for Equality (OkEq) First Thursday reception exhibit.

Youth from local Gay Straight Alliances, Diversity Clubs, Social Justice Clubs and the Youth/Elder Storytelling Group contributed artwork centering on the broad prompt of “liberation” to inspire their art. They were asked to interpret it in any way that made sense to them; the exciting works are palpable.

Beginning with the First Thursday reception on November 3, their art will be on display at the Dennis R. Neill Equality Center throughout the month.

The art features a variety of photography, painting, drawing, and other visual arts. As an added perk to draw you to the opening night reception, there will be a performance of The Youth/Elder Storytelling Group.

This performance-art and dialogue will combine youth and elders telling their stories of life, coming out, and growing up LGBTQ. The hour-long piece will take you on a journey from 1945 to the future, with autobiographical tales of joy, fear, denial, and self-acceptance. Come prepared to be inspired and touched.

The show begins with the First Thursday reception on November 3 from 6 - 9 p.m. at the Dennis R. Neill Equality Center, 621 E. 4th Street in downtown Tulsa. There will be a door prize drawn of the artist’s work.

Oklahomans for Equality/OkEq is Oklahoma’s oldest gay rights organization. OkEq works for social justice and full inclusion for Oklahoma’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) citizens and their allies. For more information, visit www.okeq.org.
