FOUR films on Saturday!...
ANIMALSDirector: Marcal ForesSpain Pol (Oriol Pla), a 17 year old introverted teenager attends a private English language high school. He lives with his older brother Llorenc (Javier Beltran) but has very little interaction with him. His closest companion is Deerhoof, a tattered walking, talking, sentient teddy bear. This is ANIMALS, Marcal Fores' dark and quirky elegy to the nightmarish world of post-adolescence. Llorenc is concerned with the arrested development of his sibling and threatens him with medical treatment. Pol listens to Llorenc's counsel and begrudgingly frees himself of Deerhoof. From this point, Pol's world, a fragile balance of imagined and real spirals into chaos. A shroud of strange events envelops Pol. His attempts to unravel and understand the unexpected death of a classmate, the attention of a sympathetic English teacher (Martin Freeman, The Hobbit), and the arrival of enigmatic Ikari (Augustus Prew), a dark brooding transfer student, challenges the sexually confused protagonist towards an existential crisis. Distinctly original and brimming with creativity and wonder, ANIMALS is mesmerizing and engrossing. Ultimately, Fores' ominous dream scape is a coming-of-age mystery that evokes and provokes thought and sincere emotion. Love, loneliness, and alienation are the primary themes that drive this tragic story. Fores guides his viewer into a weird world of beauty and dread. This is the bridge and the pit where adulthood emerges from immaturity. "Imagination is a human construct." Catalan and English with English subtitles. WINNER! IN BLOOMDirector: Chris Michael BirkmeierUSA IN BLOOM is an authentic depiction of modern gay relations. Chris Michael Birkmeier's inspired and accomplished debut is a harrowing and poignant examination of Chicago's seductively hip queer scene and its various inhabitants. Pot smoking pot dealer Kurt (Kyle Wigent) and moody grocery store clerk Paul (Tanner Rittenhouse) lead a contented life of domestic bliss and everlasting love. Tranquil and carefree for a seamless 2 years, they've built a life of comfort and predictability. One fateful evening, their relationship is tested when Kurt meets Kevin (Adam Fane) , a hot single flirt. After a brief moment of simmering heat and the possibility of the impossible, they exchange a kiss. From that instant, Kurt is overwhelmed with guilt and curiosity. He's unable and unwilling to go back. Kurt and Paul's relationship begins to fray. Compelled to move forward, Kurt places himself in jeopardy whilst pursuing Kevin. As he struggles against an overpowering desire to stray, he strays further and further from Paul. Kurt's inner turmoil is reflected in the dark streets during Chicago's tumultuous summer. IN BLOOM is an intimate and profound epiphany. It's rich in detail and provocative in story-telling. Featuring break-out performances from Wigent and Rittenhouse, Birkmeier's raw anti-romance is ground-breaking and revelatory. IN BLOOM is gritty, voyeuristic, and painfully honest.
