PFLAG Norman announces 2017 scholarships

Deadline for PFLAG Norman 2017 scholarships is March 31.

Marking the 12th year of its scholarship program, PFLAG Norman has announced it will award three $1,000 scholarships to Norman residents applying for or continuing a post-secondary educational program.

Candidates include public, private or homeschooled students or post-secondary students. Applicants for a scholarship must be a resident of Norman and committed to moving equality forward for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer persons in our society.

Applicants also must be furthering their education or training in an accredited program within the year following graduation. The scholarship will be applied to their tuition and fees.

"The purpose of the scholarship is to honor Norman youth that support inclusion of people of all sexual orientations and gender identities in our community,” a PFLAG spokesperson said. "The scholarship is a way for PFLAG to recognize that young people are important to the Norman community and encourage their confidence to make a difference."

The PFLAG Norman 2017 Scholarship application is available at pflagnorman.org, on their Facebook page at pflagnorman, by contacting the Norman chapter at help@pflagnorman.org or at Norman high schools. The deadline for applying is 11:59 p.m., Friday, March 31.

If you are a parent, sibling, or friend of a GLBT person, are yourself GLBT, or wish to support Norman's GLBT community, please consider attending PFLAG meetings.

PFLAG Norman chapter meets the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. at St. Stephen's United Methodist Church, 1801 W. Brooks (McGee & Brooks), Norman, OK.

Meetings are designed to provide a non-threatening place to meet with others and discuss issues regarding being or knowing a gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender (GLBT) person. There are times when folks need help or aid to stand up against unjust conditions or prejudice in the community and society in general.

PFLAG is a support, education and advocacy organization with 400 chapters across the United States. For more information, visit www.pflagnorman.org.
