Eric Heckert established Pop Alchemyin December 2012 for the purpose of designing a highly personalized visual language based on esoteric principles as filtered through a pop surrealist lens.

Pop surrealism, or 'lowbrow' art, describes an underground visual art movement that arose in the Los Angeles, California, area in the late 1970s. It is a populist art movement with its cultural roots in underground comics, the punk music scene, and hot-rod cultures of the street. The pop surrealist movement has been popularized largely due to Juxtapoz magazine, which was created in 1994 by a group of artists and collectors including Robert Williams, Fausto Vitello, C.R. Stecyk III, Greg Escalante, and Eric Swenson.

In January of 2014, Heckert was one of 80 artists selected by Juxtapoz co-founder Greg Escalante to participate in the first national juried pop surrealist exhibit at the Baton Rouge Gallery Center for Contemporary Art.
