Project aims to provide housing for struggling LGBT youth

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — The Memphis Gay and Lesbian Community Center wants to provide transitional housing for homeless or struggling youth in the LGBT community by using refurbished shipping containers.

The center's Youth Services Manager Stephanie Reyes tells the Commercial Appeal (http://bit.ly/1PHXiKu ) she and volunteers developed the idea for The Metamorphosis Project after she found out that Habitat for Humanity in Kentucky was making shipping container homes for veterans.

According to Reyes, the center's Executive Director Will Batts and Operations Manager Elokin CaPece, the center heard from young people in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community about problems of hunger and poverty.

In September, the center bought four unused lots and a private drive for the housing project, which will be used by LGBT youth ages 18 to 25.
