Renowned artist at Paseo Pottery during May ‘First Friday Gallery Walk’

Every month, rain or shine, the Paseo Arts District is proud to present its First Friday Gallery Walk, free to attend and open to the public. This May, however, the Paseo is particularly pleased to announce a visit from renowned Oaxacan ceramic artist Guillermina Aguilar, who will be an Artist-in-Residence at Paseo Pottery (3017 Paseo Drive, 525-3017)

Aguilar is a well-documented Master of Mexican Popular Art, and the eldest of the Aguilar sisters of Ocotlan, Oaxaca, world famous for their whimsical and inventive ceramic art. The work of these women is highly sought after by Folk Art collectors. Guillermina and her sisters have exhibited their work widely ingalleries and museums both in Mexico and abroad, including an exhibition at the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian. Guillermina's work is illustrated in two important books on Mexican Folk Art:"Oaxacan Ceramics: Traditional Folk Art by Oaxacan Women" by Lois Wasserspring and in the Banamex publication: "Great Masters of Mexican Popular Art."

Aguilar’s visit to Oklahoma is made possible through the support of Gayle Younghein, an expert of LatinAmerican Folk Art—curating museum and gallery shows on folk art and weaving for 20 years—and a close, 30-year friend of Guillermina.Gayle, a respected photographer whose work has been displayed at the United Nations, has led cultural tours to Oaxaca for 20 years.

The Historic Paseo Arts District’s First Friday Gallery Walk for May will take place Friday, May 3 from 6:00-10:00pm. Paseo galleries featuring more than 75 artists will host opening receptions, promising something for everyone.

The Paseo a unique and vibrant Oklahoma City arts community. Dozens of galleries, three restaurants and a handful of shops stand in distinctive Spanish Mission Revival style buildings, all within walking distance.
