Risqué Art to show at The Womb Gallery
Oklahoma City - - University of Central Oklahoma’s undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in Dr. Lindsey Churchill’s History of Sex in Americas class will be addressing issues discussed in their sixteen week Spring semester class through art that will be showcased at The Womb Gallery in Downtown Oklahoma City Tuesday, April 29 through Monday, May 4.
The UCO students have spent the past fourteen weeks making baked goods, creating art pieces, writing original poetry, and promoting the event titled, RISQUE: The Art of Sexuality. Dr. Churchill’s History of Sex in America’s course is aimed at educating the students on the intertwining relationships of power and sexuality. Throughout the semester, Churchill teaches her students about the hidden history of sex by examining colonial sexuality, third and fourth genders, homosexuality, rape, abortion, prostitution, and much more.
“I am so proud of the work these students have put into the art show,” said Churchill. This show was inspired by a discussion our class had about the lack of sex positive images and ideas in our culture. We seem to have two extremes – pornography inspired objectification or strict silence about sexuality. This show hopes to offer a counter narrative to those perspectives.”
An opening night event is scheduled for Tuesday, April 29, at The Womb Gallery located at 25 N.W. 9th in Oklahoma City starting at 7pm. Students will be holding a silent auction for RISQUE art pieces and a raffle with all proceeds benefiting local women’s shelters. Activities during the event will include: live body painting, poetry reading, music, and busting the raffle piñata. People can follow the student’s art progression on twitter, @risqueartofsex; as well as follow live tweets from the event.
