After voicing opposition to Georgia's proposed anti-LGBT law this week, director Rob Reiner is now also calling for a film boycott for North Carolina until that state repeals a new law banning cities from enacting their own anti-discrimination protections.

“Until this hateful law is repealed and LGBT North Carolinans are treated with the equal dignity they deserve, I will not film another production in North Carolina, and I encourage my colleagues in the entertainment industry to vow to do the same,” Reiner said in a statement Friday according to MSNBC.

The Republican-led legislature passed the bill after Charlotte approved anti-discrimination measures that would have allowed transgender people to use bathrooms corresponding to their gender identity. Gov. Pat McCrory signed the bill into law Wednesday.

A Motion Picture Association of America official on Thursday also said that studios oppose “any law that legitimizes discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.”

The Gayly reported on Thursday that Reiner, along with other actors and producers, sent a letter by the Human Rights Campaign to Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal demanding that he veto a bill that passed the house protecting same-sex marriage opponents.

Georgia's tax credits have drawn the film and TV industry here.

The bill prevents government burden of religious belief or penalty against faith-based organizations, including refusal to serve or hire someone. It protects clergy who won't perform gay marriages and people who won't attend a wedding. Deal has until May 3 to act. He opposed earlier versions but hasn't commented on the final bill.
