School asks judge to stay order in transgender bathroom case

GLOUCESTER, Va. (AP) — A Virginia school board is asking a federal judge not to force it to allow a transgender teen to use the boys bathroom when school resumes this fall.

U.S. District Court Judge Robert G. Doumar ordered last week that the Gloucester County School Board must let Gavin Grimm use the bathroom that corresponds to his gender identity while the court examines the legal issues of his case.

But the board asked the judge this week to put that mandate on hold while it asks the Supreme Court to intervene. The appeals court said the board discriminated against Grimm by forbidding him from using the boys' restroom.

The board says allowing Grim to use the boys' restroom will cause "severe disruption to the school" due to outcry from parents and students.
