Shouts and Song: Clash at meeting over transgender bathrooms

CONWAY, S.C. (AP) — About 500 people turned out, some of them singing and shouting to drown out others, as the Horry County Board of Education discussed the use of bathrooms by transgender students.

Local media outlets report the board on Monday agreed to support an appeal of a Virginia federal court ruling allowing students to use the bathroom of the gender with which they identify. The board agreed to file a friend of the court brief.

Most of those at the meeting seemed to oppose allowing students to use the bathroom of the gender with which they identify. Some held signs reading "It's common sense" and some broke into song or prayer.

One woman who said that transgender people should not be lumped into the same category as criminals was met with shouts.
