Springfield Little Theatre’s production of “Sister Act”
What’s better than big, glitzy numbers? Big, glitzy numbers with nuns!
"When the wimples start quivering, the pinched mouths break into sunbeam smiles, and the nuns start rocking to raise the Gothic rafters, all’s right in the kingdom of musical comedy,” said The New York Times in a review of Sister Act. Now, theatergoers in Springfield can rejoice in the antics and music of Deloris Van Cartier, with the Springfield Little Theatre’s production of this rafter-raising musical.
Sister Act, the musical, is based on the Touchstone Pictures Motion Picture Sister Act written by Joseph Howard, and starring Whoopi Goldberg. Sister Act is the feel-amazing musical comedy smash hit that has audiences jumping to their feet! When disco diva Deloris Van Cartier witnesses a murder, she is put in protective custody in one place the cops are sure she won’t be a found: a convent!
Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and uptight Mother Superior. Using her unique disco moves and singing talent to inspire the choir, Deloris breathes new life into the church and community but in doing so, blows her cover.
The production is filled with powerful gospel music, outrageous dancing and a truly moving story, Sister Act will leave audiences breathless. A sparkling tribute to the universal power of friendship, Sister Act is reason to rejoice.
The New York Post wrote about the Broadway production, “Amen to the season’s happiest surprise! Ridiculously fun! The only thing better than big, glitzy numbers? Big, glitzy numbers...with nuns! Sister Act is off the charts and packed with goodies!"
The SLT production of Sister Act is directed by John R. “Chuck” Rogers, choreographed by Josh Inmon. Susan Gravett is the Music Director. The show features music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Glenn Slater, book by Cheri and Bill Steinkellner, and additional book material by Douglas Carter Beane.
The show stars Niki Calloway as Delores Van Cartier and Judy Luxton as Mother Superior. Other cast members are Maria Schroeder, Angela Burrows, Nanette Crighton, Gary Buzbee, Ryan Mattix, Daniel Bush, Chris Stanford, Michael Coniff, Scott Obert, Kris Langston, Alberta Smith, Paige Patric, Sabrina Trabue and Travis Taylor.
