Gay Pride picnic, celebration set for Sunday

In recognition of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month, TahlEquality and members of the community are organizing Tahlequah’s first Gay Pride Picnic and Celebration. The event will begin at 2 p.m. in Norris Park Sunday, June 1.

Attendees are asked bring their own blankets, chairs, food, and drinks. Nonprofit organizations will have tables set up for vending goods and handing out information. Entertainment will include live music, a disc jockey, a “smart mob,” and the Turrelle Sisters, “drag queens” from the Tulsa area.

This is a family event showing support for the LGBTQ2 (lesbian, gay, bixsexual, transgender, queer/questioning, two-spirit) community in the Tahlequah area.

“Bring a picnic blanket and help us honor those who have stood before us, and endured things we have been nearly oblivious to,” said Carden Crow, president of TahlEquality and head organizer of the event. “We can show our neighbors that we are a whole community who are raising children, paying taxes, living, dreaming, and loving in every corner of this town.”

Originally, Crow and family and friends were planning a small gathering, but after the sharing of the event on Facebook and other sites, projected attendance has grown in the past two weeks. The city’s recreation director, Melissa Harris, confirmed the event organizers’ application and rental agreement for the park has been approved.

The planning committee was to have met Tuesday evening for final preparations.
