Transgender Delaware inmate now getting hormone therapy

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — A transgender Delaware inmate has become the first in the state to begin hormone therapy in prison.

The News Journal of Wilmington (http://delonline.us/1WQVKlt) reports that Kai Short last month became the state's first transgender inmate to begin hormone therapy in prison. Last year, Short, who was born Lakisha Lavette Short, became Delaware's first transgender inmate granted the right to change his name.

Short has not undergone gender reassignment surgery. Taxpayers are paying for his weekly testosterone injections, which are estimated to cost $1,320 a year.

Corrections officials say Short, who is serving a 55-year prison sentence for robbery and weapons charges, is one of two Delaware inmates to receive hormone therapy in prison. The other inmate, whom officials declined to identify, is believed to have started treatment before getting incarcerated.
